day 365

December 31, 2010

The end. The final shot. Done. So how do you finish a project like this? Do you try to take the best shot of the year and top everything else you did? I took over 8,000 photos this year. I’m really gonna beat all those on the last day? Instead of trying for something fantastic and over the top, I’m gonna end it on a real, slightly sarcastic note. This week has been tough, I’ve been sick and in need of some serious sleep which I did not get. I’m also on call for my job. I made it through the week and it is finally time to relax and my wife now has my cold so I need to take care of my son so she can rest and we try to keep him from getting sick. As I sat down to feed him before we ordered a pizza, I got a call from work, I had to put him down which caused him to cry. My wife had a sneeze attack, I dialed in to work to fix the problem and I get a bloody nose as bad as I’ve had in a long time. Things were going great. I fix the problem, I go back to feeding him and then finally get to order our pizza. I get our pizza, sit to eat, and my son starts to cry (he’s 2 months old). so eating waits. He needs changing. Finally he is calm, finally I get to eat and work calls again. By the time I get done with that, my son wants to eat again (and be changed again). My wife, with her cold getting worse, has had all she can take and goes to bed, sad and upset that this is how we are spending New Years Eve. The champagne will have to wait. I finish feeding my son. Work calls again. Then, finally all is quiet. Wife sleeping, son sleeping. Not the best New Year’s but my loved ones are near by and safe. There’s only a few hours left in the year, and I still didn’t have a photo. Crap. So i gathered up some of the items we did use, some of the items we had to use and some that will just have to wait. It represents this project pretty well. A mix of things I wanted to shoot, things I had to shoot to get a shot for the day and things I never got to shoot that will just have to wait. I’m glad I did this. I’m a better photographer for it. It made me think about many things, too many to share here. It’s also a great documentation of 2010. So much happened this year: a crazy amount of working, I celebrated my first year of marriage, a new house, a baby and 365 photos to be proud of. I guess I am tired for a reason! Well thanks to all that have followed, commented, encouraged and kept me going. Hopefully you will all be there for next year’s project. What is this next project you say? You’ll just have to wait till next year. You can wait a few hours can’t you? 365. DONE. Adios!

This is it, one more to go. You think I’d be excited by the accomplishment and the works I’ve created. But it’s been a tough week and all I am looking forward to is the end of it for some needed rest. But no matter how tough it feels, I just have to remember how good I have it and, this is the important part, at least I am not a whack-ass Cookie Monster slipper that is missing an eye. It can always be worse.
